Telecom companies are scratching their heads after the government set the base price of the 3G spectrum which they believe is too steep. And now, they will have to cough up more money. Telcos have lost a differential tariff case dating back to 2008 at the Supreme Court. The private telcos charged higher for calls to BSNL, MTNL customers in states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. However, calling the move as arbitrary, the apex court said that customers cannot be differentiated based on call origination. The TRAI has asked telcos to set aside extra amount collected.
